DOCUMENTARIES
In the documentary Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood, my colleagues and I describe the amazingly sophisticated techniques already in place in 2008 that marketers were using to manipulate children. The harm being done—and it’s only gotten worse—included advertising that contributed to childhood obesity, violent behavior and beliefs, extreme traditional gender roles and many other serious problems. Since marketing also sells a materialistic meta-message that the way to happiness is through buying the right stuff, this capitalist propaganda is now in place from cradle to grave.
In Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction, the center of the environmental crisis, the human-caused sixth mass extinction event, is addressed from many angles: ecological, political, economic, psychological, spiritual and artistic. Climate changeis but one aspect of this incomprehensible and unnecessary tragedy. The film has won several awards. Today, the sixth mass extinction event continues, largely unpublicized.
